Overreliance on policing and incarceration has impacted people across the country. This reality has limited police effectiveness, reduced trust in law enforcement, and undermined safety. We can bridge these gaps by resourcing law enforcement to focus on the most serious offenses, increasing transparency, and ensuring accountability in cases of misconduct.
We can also invest in more expansive approaches to public safety with promising reforms such as alternatives to arrest and incarceration. These are effective responses to crime that reduce the burden on law enforcement and advance safety for all our communities.
analysis has found that only 7% of 911 calls are for situations involving violent crime. 19% of 911 calls involve mental health or substance use issues which could be better addressed by alternative crisis response–which has been associated with reductions in low-level crimes.
